CIVL 1101 - Project #1 Description
set cell vertical height

Objectives: The objective of this project is to develop a topographic model of a site (the one assigned to you in the lab).

Project Presentation/Situation: Your firm (lab group) is competing with other local firms to be the surveying firm of The University of Memphis. Your audience is Dr. Okenwa Okoli, Dean of the Herff College of Engineering, University of Memphis. Your group's technical report and presentation will demonstrate your surveying skills and enable you to communicate directly with the university administrators responsible for selecting a surveying company. Your proposal will be a technical report and a formal presentation with visual aids. Information on these components will be presented during class and in the lab, and technical report-writing information is also available on our website.

Typically, the first step in a topographic survey is to measure the elevation of a series of points within the area. As discussed in class, these points can be located using a grid system. Record the elevation of each grid point to the correct number of significant figures. Develop a contour map using at least a 1-foot contour interval from the elevation data. A contour map of your site will be the primary deliverable for this project.

Evaluation Criteria

The topographic mapping project will be evaluated as follows:

  • Project Report
    • Format and Readability (30 points) - Technical writing content consists of the combination of format, content, and document design
    • Technical Content (50 points) - Use of engineering design concepts, completeness of ideas, support of decisions presented, comprehensiveness of observations and conclusions
    • Please submit a printed, unstapled copy of your final technical report at the presentation and submit an electronic copy via eCourseware.
    • Report Guidelines

  • Oral Presentation (20 points) - Based on peer reviews of the presentation
