The University of Memphis, in association with Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), is organizing a ‘Safe Driving Campaign’ on September 04, 2024. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Memphis campus.

Activities Planned During the Event

Seatbelt Convincer

Seatbelt Convincer

A seat belt convincer will be installed where attendees can have a hands-on experience of the impact of a low-speed collision of 5-10 miles per hour. This device allows attendees to physically feel the force of a crash at low speeds, highlighting the critical role that seatbelts play in preventing injuries and motivating consistent seatbelt use.

Seat Belt Pledge

I Will Wear My Seat Belt Pledge

The "I Will Wear My Seat Belt" campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of wearing seat belts every time one gets into a vehicle. The campaign encourages individuals to make a personal commitment to buckle up, regardless of the trip's distance or duration. Participants will be encouraged to take a pledge, share it with their networks, and inspire others during the event. There will be a poster board for sign-ups, and one student will be randomly selected every 15 minutes to receive a prize.

Pedal Kart

Pedal Kart with Fatal Vision Goggles

Attendees will get a chance to ride a pedal truck which is a human-powered vehicle designed to resemble a traditional truck but operates through pedalling, much like a bicycle. This is a fun and engaging activity, and attendees will be provided additional information on other unique solutions that focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Driving with fatal vision goggles will give participants an idea of how one loses control while driving under influence of alcohol.

TN Accident Facts

TN Accident Facts

Through posters and handouts, attendees will learn about some statistics and facts regarding crashes in the State of Tennessee. We will be highlighting why safe driving should be taken seriously.

Interaction with instructors from driving schools

Interaction with Instructors from Driving Schools

Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with instructors from two of the most reputed driving schools in Memphis. These schools will provide information about best practices to ensure safe driving and offer practical takeaways on responsible driving.

Fatal Vision Goggles

Fatal Vision Goggles

This activity is designed to demonstrate the levels of impairment and the dangers of driving while impaired. The glasses distort vision and cause the wearer to behave similarly to one impaired by alcohol or drugs. Participants can wear these goggles and try to walk in a straight line, showing how alcohol can impact one’s control.

Touch – A – Truck

Touch – A – Truck

We will bring a big truck, and participants will be able to experience firsthand what it is like to sit behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer. We will educate attendees on the “No-Zone” areas of a truck, which are huge blind spots where the truck driver can’t see the motorist.

Help Truck

Help Truck

A "Help Truck" is a specialized vehicle designed to provide immediate assistance in emergency or roadside situations. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) operates HELP trucks on Tennessee's most heavily traveled highways. A help truck will be available during the event, and attendees will be provided with information about the features and uses of these trucks.
