Professor Robert H. Dodds, Jr. is the 15th faculty member to serve as Head of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department during its 130 year history.
A native of Memphis, TN , Professor Dodds earned BS in civil Engineering at the University of Memphis and the MS, PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois.
Before returning to Illinois in 1987, he served on the CEE faculty at the University of Kansas for nine years.
His research focuses on fatigue and fracture of structural metals and of new, advanced materials.
In recognition of his research contributions, Professor Dodds was named in 1997 as the Ist holder of the Nathan M. Newmark Endowed Professorship.
In 2000, he was named the 1 st holder of the M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering- a position he holds today.
His research awards include the Walter L. Huber Prize from ASCE, the Nathan M. Newmark Medal from ASCE, elected Fellow of the ASTM, the George Irwin Medal from the ASTM, and Honorary Fellow of the International Congress on Fracture.
