Jerry L. Anderson holds a
B.S. (Tennessee Technological University (TTU),
1967), M.S. (Vanderbilt University, 1968), both
in Civil Engineering and Ph.D. (Vanderbilt
University, 1972) in Environmental and Water
Resources Engineering. He has been on the
faculty to the Department of Civil Engineering
at the University of Memphis since 1972. During
the summer breaks until 1991, he worked in
various branches of the Memphis District Corp of
Engineers (MDCOE) and in the Estuaries Division
at the Waterways Experiment Station. Since
1991, he has worked in the Ground Water
Institute in the Herff College of Engineering
where he became the Director in 1998. His work
for the MDCOE was in the Hydraulics branch and
River Stabilization branch of the Engineering
Division and in the Plan Formulation Section of
the Planning and Management Division. As
Director of the Ground Water Institute, he has
directed and conducted research on aquifer
systems that supply water to City of Memphis and
other municipalities in Shelby County.
In the Department of Civil
Engineering, Dr. Anderson has been responsible
for the development of the water resources
course offerings. He has taught both
undergraduate and graduate courses in the area
of water resources engineering. He serves on
various Departmental, College and University
committees. Most recently he was the
Department’s representative to the Faculty
Senate and still serves on the Effort
Certification Committee.
Dr. Anderson was the lead
author on the first Drainage Manual written for
the City of Memphis which was adopted in
principal by most of the municipalities in
Shelby County. He has co-authored numerous
publications on the hydrodynamics of ground
water movement in the Memphis Sand aquifer.
Most recently, he co-authored a comparative
assessment of the ground water quality in
Memphis with that of the Republic of Moldova.
Dr. Anderson is very active
in his professional societies where he holds
Life Membership in the American Society of
Engineers (ASCE), American Water Works
Association, Society of Military Engineers, and
Reserve Officers Association. He is an American
Academy of Water Resources Engineer, Diplomate.
Additionally, he is a fellow in the American
Society of Engineers. He has served on various
committees and task committees of the Water
Resources Planning and Management Division (now
Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI))
and was the Chairmen of the Executive Committee
FY96. He continues to serve on several awards
committee within EWRI as well as on the ASCE
Papers Committee.
Dr. Anderson is a retired
Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was
commissioned as a reserve officer while
attending TTU in 1966. He has held many command
and staff positions in the reserve forces. He
commanded A Company of the 467th
Engineer Battalion where he also was the S-4,
S-3, and became Commander in 1985. He served as
the Assistant Chief of Staff – Engineering and
Assistant Chief of Staff – Facilities in the 412th
Engineer Command. As a Captain in the 412th,
he led the writing, planning, and exercise group
which demonstrated the ability of a reserve
component force to deploy directly from its
homes station. During his tenure as ACoS-Engr,
he was responsible for the planning and
employment of numerous capstone Engineer
Battalions in support of European Theater of
Operations as they maintained and upgraded
various training sites and deployment within
Theater. During his tenure as ACoS –
Facilities, his section was responsible for the
successful competition in the Army Communities
of Excellence as the 412th Engineer
Command was the reserve category.
