Fry Fund Update

2006 EDay

The annual Herff College of Engineering Open House will be held Friday, November 17, 2006, from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Last year, we had an excellent turnout of alumni volunteers, and we hope to see even more of you this year. Alumni were available in the Civil labs and hallway to greet prospective students and to answer questions about the program, and also served as tour guides to student groups. This is an invaluable service to our department, as prospective students and their parents are always very impressed by the level of participation from our alums. This is a great opportunity to support the department! If you would like to be a volunteer for this year’s event, please email Stephanie Ivey at ssalyers@memphis.edu with your contact information and time that you would like to attend.

ASCE Golf Tournament

The ASCE Golf Tournament will be held on October 23 at Glen Eagles Golf Course at the Millington Naval Air Station. The proceeds of the tournament go to scholarships in Civil Engineering at the University of Memphis, CBU, and UT Martin. If you or your company is interested in playing in this year's tournament or providing a sponsorship, please contact Paul Palazolo.

Women in Engineering Mentor Program

The Herff College of Engineering formed its first Women in Engineering Mentor program this fall to support the student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and the inaugural group of students participating in the Women in Engineering Living Community. Alumnae from all programs within the College are volunteering as mentors to provide job advice, networking assistance and tips for succeeding in the field of engineering. Alumnae participants from the Civil Engineering Department include Laura Rowland (‘84 and ‘88), Claire Barnett (‘85), Vickie Watson (‘02) and Elizabeth Burks (‘97).

Mentor/student activities planned for the up-coming school year include field trips to local businesses, job shadowing days and a community service day in the spring of 2007. For more information on becoming a mentor or the Women in Engineering Mentor program, please contact Carolyn Oldenburg, Development Director, at (901) 678-1537.
