ASCE Deep South Conference

On Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1, the ASCE Student Chapter hosted the 2006 ASCE Deep South Regional Conference. The event was attended by 300 students and faculty from 13 engineering schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee. Thanks to the generosity of ASCE members throughout the state, students from three Louisiana schools that were ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita attended the conference for free.

The Friday events, held in the University Center, included a steel bridge building competition, a mystery event, and a professional paper competition. For this year’s mystery event, students had to duct-tape a chair to the wall and sit in it for three minutes. Teams were judged by the weight of the person in the chair relative to the amount of duct tape used.

On Saturday, the conference moved to the lake at the Macon Road campus of Southwest Tennessee Community College for a day of concrete canoe races, concrete horseshoe pitching, a surveying competition, and a lakeside BBQ lunch.

Saturday evening found everyone back at the University Center for the awards banquet, which included a jazz trio and highlights of the day’s events. The highlights included an interview with faculty advisor Roger Meier on the Channel 5 evening news.

Career Fair

On October 4, the ASCE Student Chapter hosted its 5 th annual Career Fair in the first floor hallway of the Engineering Sciences Building. Most years, the limited number of available spots fills up very quickly, and this year was no exception. This year’s list of companies included AFRAM Corp.; APAC Tennessee; Arkansas DOT; Burns, Cooley, Dennis; City of Memphis; Cives Steel; Golder & Associates; Gresham Smith & Partners; Kimley-Horn, Inc.; Tennessee DOT; and The Kroger Company.

Student turnout was great and most recruiters left with a handful of resumes. A couple of students have already received job offers, including one prospect in Argentina! Of special note is the fact that half the companies attending this year have never recruited here before, so competition for our students is obviously growing.

If you’d like to be included in next year’s Career Fair, e-mail Roger Meier at rwmeier@memphis.edu.
