Student Spotlight
Ryan Pickett is yet another example of the outstanding civil engineering students our department has been able to attract. Ryan held many offices in student chapter organizations throughout his undergraduate career, including serving as President of the ASCE student chapter, Vice President of the ITE student chapter, and a variety of offices with the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Ryan received the Paul Walker Brotherly Love Award, Tennessee Road Builder's Scholarship, and the Herff College of Engineering scholarships, and managed to maintain grades high enough to earn a spot on the University of Memphis Dean's List while being involved in many extracurricular activities. He has worked on various engineering related projects throughout his undergraduate career, including the Memphis Storm Water Utility project and many groundwater related projects. Ryan served as the Freshman Laboratory Supervisor and Grader during his senior year while also working for the Ground Water Institute (GWI). During his final undergraduate semester, Ryan elected to take a projects course funded through a grant GWI received from the EPA. His task was to collect geotechnical records of bridge construction over major river systems in the region to estimate riverbed conductance and the geologic unit into which the river is eroding.

A spring 2008 graduate, Ryan passed the FE exam during his senior year, and decided to attend graduate school at the University of Memphis through funding from the Ground Water Institute. Ryan has already begun working on research related to his Master's thesis over the summer, and will be focusing on groundwater/surface water interactions. He is also the recipient of the Herff Graduate Fellowship, and began graduate courses this fall.

Students Visit Levee Stabilization Project
On February 11, 2008, students from Dr. David Arellano's earth structures course and from Dr. Roger W. Meier's soil and site improvement course visited the St. Francis Levee District's lime and fly ash injection slope stabilization project in West Memphis, Arkansas. This site visit allowed the students to observe a lime and fly ash injection soil improvement operation as an alternative to stabilize levee slopes. The construction is supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Memphis District. Hayward Baker Inc. is the stabilization contractor. The Department of Civil Engineering would like to recognize the following alumni for coordinating the site visit: Rob Rash (CEO and Chief Engineer of the St. Francis Levee District), Laura Rowland (U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Memphis District Operations Project Manager), and Cory H. Williams (U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Memphis District Civil Engineer). The assistance of Loy Hamilton (U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Memphis District Acting Chief Engineer), Brenda Beasley (U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Memphis District Public Affairs Specialist), and representatives of Hayward Baker Inc. is also greatly appreciated.
