Fry Fund Update

ASCE Student Chapter
In early April, the ASCE Student Chapter participated in the 2008 ASCE Deep South Student Conference hosted by Louisiana State University. The students entered five events--concrete canoe, steel bridge, concrete frisbee, mystery event, and professional paper--and took 1st place in the concrete frisbee competition and 2nd place in the mystery event. The 20 students who participated (and their faculty advisor, Dr. Roger Meier) had a lot of fun and returned to Memphis ready to start on next year's canoe and bridge designs. Several students will be working this summer on concrete mix designs and hull designs for the canoe. Other students will be trying to raise money and solicit in-kind contributions from local engineers for next year's canoe and bridge. If you would like to donate money or materials to the effort, please contact Dr. Roger Meier at 901-678-3284.

ITE Student Chapter
During the Spring 2008 semester, the University of Memphis ITE student chapter prepared a proposal for the International Board of ITE for the 2008 Parking and Trip Data Collection project. The proposal was prepared in conjunction with Dr. Ivey's Transportation Systems Engineering course. The University of Memphis chapter was selected as one of only 9 student chapters across the country as grant recipients. The purpose of these student chapter grants is to generate relevant technical data for transportation engineers and planners while facilitating ITE Student Chapter activity and student mentoring by transportation professionals. The U of M student chapter collected data for Senior adult housing/assisted living/congregate care facilities within the Memphis area. Alumni Steve Mosher and Greg Dotson of Gresham Smith and Partners served as the professional mentors for the project. The student chapter successfully completed the project and final report, and was awarded a $1000 grant. Grant funds will be used for transportation-related conference fees for ITE student chapter members, activities designed to attract new ITE student chapter members, and educational outreach activities with The University of Memphis Campus School.
