Southeast Cement Association Donates Books
The Southeast Cement Association (SCA) has generously donated 50 copies of Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures for use in the Civil Engineering Foundation Sequence (CIVL 1101 and CIVL 1112). This donation is valued at $2,500 and was arranged and coordinated by Tom Wahl of Buzzi Unicem USA, Inc. and Lori Tiefenthaler, Executive Director of SCA. Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures published by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and considered the definitive reference on concrete technology covering fundamentals and detailed information on freshly mixed and hardened concrete. This manual is extensively updated and expanded, and discusses materials for concrete, such as portland cements, supplementary cementing materials, aggregates, admixtures and fibers; air entrainment; procedures for mix proportioning, batching, mixing, transporting, handling, placing, consolidating, finishing, and curing concrete. The SCA represents the manufacturers and distributors of Portland cement in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Thanks to Our Adjuncts One aspect of our program that has been long overlooked and taken for granted is the contribution made by our adjunct faculty. We pride ourselves on providing quality teaching and our adjuncts are instrumental in accomplishing this goal. Our adjunct faculty are practitioners with unique knowledge who provide instruction in specialty areas when we do not have the expertise among the existing faculty or when faculty have research commitments. Students benefit from the “real world perspective” offered by practicing engineers. The following is a list of these special people that we thank for contributing their time and effort, with meager financial reward, to the department by teaching classes over the past few years. When you see them, tell them thanks for a job well done!
