Welcome to Civil Engineering Materials!

All course announcements will be posted here, so please check this page frequently.

 Tuesday, December 8
Here are some selected pages from the final exam showing the equations, tables, and figures that you will be provided to help you answer the exam questions.

 Monday, December 7
Please fill out the SETE forms for this class. And don't be shy about filling in the comments section, either. I've made several changes to this class as the result of student comments.

 Tuesday, December 1
Your final lab is here. It is a paper lab (a concrete mix design). Today in class we will start discussing the ACI mix design method and tomorrow during the lab we will finish it. That will give you everything you need to complete the homework.

 Monday, November 30
Remember, your term papers are due tomorrow. Your oral presentations will be given during the lab period on the last day of class (Wednesday, December 9th).

 Tuesday, November 24
Because we're one lecture behind we will use next week's lab period to catch up.
Please check the updated schedule. Remember, your term papers are due next Tuesday. Your final lab homework will be due the following Tuesday.

 Wednesday, November 18
The "official" results from Lab 8 are located here and the questions are here.

 Thursday, November 12
The "official" results from Lab 7 are located here. After class today, we'll strip the cylinders we made yesterday and put them in the humid room.

 Sunday, November 8
I still need paper topics from Jeffrey, Phillip, and Shaun. One possible topic is the use of recycled roofing shingles in asphalt concrete. If you can find other types of recycled materials being used in concrete and asphalt, that could be a good topic, too. Another topic is how asphalt and concrete can be used to obtain LEED credits. Recently, there's been some articles on deriving asphalt cement from biomass using a process similar to making biofuels. There's even a company making a plant-based cold mix to fill potholes. Someone might also think about a paper on "greenwashing" in the asphalt and concrete industries. Greenwashing is the unjustified appropriation of the "green" appellation by a company or industry to improve their image.

 Sunday, November 8
I've posted the lab notes for Laboratory 7 (this week) and Laboratory 8 (next week).
After that, we'll have one last paper laboratory (a concrete mix design homework) that will be assigned the first week of December and due on the last day of lecture.

 Wednesday, November 4
Today we'll have a guest speaker talk about Asphalt Innovations during the lab period. We'll meet in Room 114 from 2:20 to approximately 4:20. When our speaker's talk is over, I'll hand back the exams and go over the answers.

 Wednesday, November 4
Remember, your term paper topics are due tomorrow. To prevent duplication, please check the Term Paper Topics page to see what topics have been claimed.

 Thursday, October 22
It's time to introduce your term paper assignment. We'll talk more about it next Tuesday, but you might want to take a look at the problem statement and start thinking about a paper topic.

 Wednesday, October 21
The "official" results from Lab 6 are located here. Next Wednesday, in lieu of lab, we will have a field trip to the asphalt plant on President's Island.

 Wednesday, October 14
The "official" results from Lab 5 are located here. I'm still missing Group 1's data, but I averaged together the data from Groups 2 & 3 to produce the "official" results. This lab is due next Thursday instead of next Tuesday because of Fall Break.

 Wednesday, October 7
The data you will use to complete the questions from today's lab is as follows:

Group: 1 2 3
Spindle: 27 27 27
Speed (rpm): 50 100 200
Temperature (F): 275 300 325
Viscosity (cP): 635 305 176

 Wednesday, October 7
I've changed today's lab up slightly. Please download the new Lab Questions. You should also download the ASTM Spec for plotting viscosity-temperature charts.

 Monday, October 5
Tomorrow we will have our first exam of the semester. It is closed-book and closed-note. You'll do all your work on the test papers provided. Don't forget to download the information you'll need for Lab #4 on Wednesday.

 Tuesday, September 29
Tomorrow we will have our first field trip of the semester. We are going to visit the Memphis Stone & Gravel North Plant. We'll meet in the Materials Lab at 2:20, break up into carpools, and leave by 2:30. I've posted some driving directions here.

 Thursday, September 24
We've agreed to move the first exam from next Thursday to the following Tuesday so you have time to study from Lab #3 homework I'll hand back next week.

 Wednesday, September 23
The "official" results from Lab 3 are located here. The data for 100% concrete sand is from last semester. Since we're using the same sand from the same bin, those unit weights should still be valid.

 Thursday, September 17
The "official" results from Lab 2 are located here. Pay attention to significant digits. Remember: you should retain a couple extra digits in your intermediate calculations, then round the final answer to the appropriate number.
NOTE: Use 62.4 lb/ft
3 as the density of water. That will be accurate enough since you only report specific gravities to 3 significant digits (2 decimal places).

 Wednesday, September 9
The "official" results from Lab 1 are located here. Please complete these data sheets and attach them to the end of your homework set. NOTE: For Problem 2, you should assume that 0% of the crushed limestone passes the No. 8 sieve.

 Tuesday, August 4
The first topic we'll cover is aggregate. If you're interested in this topic and plan to work in the construction materials field, The Aggregate Handbook is available to students for just $12.00. Just mail them an order form, a copy of your student id, and a check made out to "National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association". The book is not required for this class, but it's a great bargain for students.
